چکیده

This paper investigates the effectiveness of two adaptive control strategies for modulating control force of variable friction dampers (VFDs) that are employed as semi-active devices in combination with laminated rubber bearings for seismic protection of buildings. The first controller developed in this study is an adaptive fuzzy neural controller (AFNC). It consists of a direct fuzzy controller with self-tuning scaling factors based on neural networks. A simple neural network is implemented to adjust input and output scaling factors such that the fuzzy controller effectively determine command voltage of the damper according to current level of ground motion. A multi-objective genetic algorithm is used to learn the shape of the activation functions of the network. The second controller is based on the simple adaptive control (SAC) method, which is a type of direct adaptive control approach. The objective of the SAC method is to make the plant, the controlled system, track the behavior of the structure with the optimum performance. Here, SAC methodology is employed to obtain the required control force which results in the optimum performance of the structure. For comparison purposes, an optimal LQG controller is also developed and considered in the simulations together with maximum passive operation of the friction damper. Results reveal that developed adaptive controllers can successfully improve seismic response of base-isolated buildings against various types of earthquakes.

Experimental Study of Sliding Base-Isolated Buildings with Magnetorheological Dampers in Near-Fault Earthquakes

The increase in bearing displacements of sliding isolated buildings due to near-fault earthquakes, with long-period pulse type of ground motion, is an important problem. Often, supplemental nonlinear passive dampers are incorporated into the isolation system to reduce the base displacements; however, this may increase the interstory drifts and accelerations in the superstructure. Hence, there i...

Evaluation of 2D concentrically braced frames with cylindrical dampers subjected to near-field earthquake ground motions

Near field earthquakes have imposed major damage to buildings in the past years. In some cases, the intensity of such damage is too considerable to be disregarded. The most effective way to improve seismic performance of buildings is applying a seismic control technique. The cylindrical friction damper is one of these methods, which has become popular for its desirable performance in the energy...

Study and Comparison of Seismic Behaviour of Isolator-Damper Hybrid Control System with Conventional Structural Systems

In this paper, in addition to introduce a hybrid structural system contained local isolators and dampers, its behavior and functional capabilities were studied on a conventional structure. For this purpose, an RC frame building with six-story was designed based on valid codes and then, in four cases based on the number of spans, it was split into two separate adjacent frames. Base isolation was...

Self-Tuning Fuzzy Control for Seismic Protection of Smart Base-Isolated Buildings Subjected to Pulse-Type Near-Fault Earthquakes

Pulse-type near-fault earthquakes have obvious long-duration pulses, so they can cause large deformation in a base-isolated system in contrast to non-pulse-type near-fault and far-field earthquakes. This paper proposes a novel self-tuning fuzzy logic control strategy for seismic protection of a base-isolated system, which can operate the control force of the piezoelectric friction damper agains...
